Flower Care Guide
Most floral arrangements can last 4-7 days, sometimes longer, depending on the flowers used and how you take care of them.
Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water containing a flower food provided by your florist. Flower foods make flowers last longer, but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Most packets are to be mixed with either a pint or a quart of tepid water. Flower foods should not be diluted with more water than is specified on the packet.
Remove all foliage below the water line. This helps to keep the water cleaner.
Regularly check the vase to make sure there is enough water and if necessary top up with flower food water. Bottles of liquid flower food can be purchased from a florist.
If the flower food solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely with properly mixed flower food solution. If possible, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Cut the stems on an angle. This ensures that the stems do not rest on the bottom preventing water to soak up into the stems. Be sure to use a sharp knife or clippers that will not crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into the solution.
Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate.) Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
Lightly spray your flowers with a gentle mist of water daily, removing any dead or dying flowers heads or stems from the bouquet at the same time.
Hand tied bouquets do not need to be untied. If the bouquet is delivered with water, pierce cellophane over sink and allow to drain. Place the flowers with the cellophane into a suitable vase of tepid water with the sachet of flower food added.
Flowers arranged in foam dry out quickly and therefore should be watered daily. Place a protective mat under the arrangement to avoid damage from water. It may be easier to water the arrangement over the sink and allow to dry before replacing in its original position.
Roses are to be prepared as stated in item 1. If they start to droop, re-cut the stem at an angle, wrap the head of the rose tightly in paper to keep it upright, and plunge the cut stem into 2 inches of boiling water for 1 minute. Then plunge into deep cold water.
